A Career in Public Service

Ashish Shelar began his career in public service as a member of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, where he quickly made a name for himself as a hardworking and dedicated public servant. He has held several important positions in the state government, including serving as the Minister of School Education, Sports and Youth Welfare.

Throughout his career, Shelar has been committed to improving the lives of the people he serves. Member of Legislative Assembly; Vandre West Vidhan Sabha Constituency:
Shelar was successful in emerging victorious in the Assembly elections of 2014 and 2019, where he won by a majority of 26,911 votes and 26,550 votes respectively representing the Bandra West Assembly constituency. This proved to be a stronghold as his constituency is a unique melting pot of different cultures that sublimely coexist in harmony with one another. In many ways the Vandre West Vidhan Sabha Constituency is the embodiment of Mumbai City and reflection of its social fabric.

Chief Speaker of the Legislative Assembly:
Shelar was chosen to serve as the Legislative Assembly’s Chief Speaker in 2012. In this role, he was in charge of ensuring that the assembly’s rules and procedures were followed and providing a forum for the members to openly express their views.

President of Mumbai BJP:
Shelar was appointed to lead the Mumbai wing of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) for 2 consecutive terms, and was instrumental in aligning the party values and developmental vision to the needs of Mumbai city. Being raised in the city, Shelar proved perfect for this position as he was intimately acquainted with the unique aspects of Mumbai and Mumbaikars.

Former School Education Minister: June-November 2019
Under the administration of then-CM Devendra Fadnavis, Shelar assumed leadership as the intrim Minister for School Education in 2019. He was committed to improving the state’s educational system and developing a cohesive strategy that effortlessly integrates proactive learning and traditional academics.

Member of the Maharashtra Legislative Council: July 2012-October 2014
Shelar was appointed as the Member of the Legislative Council in 2012, where he played a key role in representing the party’s objectives and the needs of Maharashtra.

Appointed Honorary Treasurer of BCCI in 2022
In October 2022, Shelar was appointed was the honorary Treasurer of the Board of Control of Cricket in India (BBCI). Following his appointment, Shelar was a part of many key decisions that have changed the course of cricket in the country. These initiatives include the creation of the Women’s Premier League, a cooperation between the Saudi Tourism Board and Tata IPL, hosting international ODIs at MCA grounds, and even supporting young athletes as they develop and hone their skills and abilities.

Elected as Member of MCA: 2022
Shelar took charge as the member of the prestigious Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) in 2022. MCA is often considered as the launchpad for young cricket talent in Mumbai and Shelar fit the bill as MCA member considering his affinity to the sport and his determination to support the up and coming talents in the city. He backed numerous significant decisions made during the club’s history, such as staging the first-ever ODI on club grounds.

Member of the T20 World Cup 2016 Managing Committee:
Shelar was nominated as Managing Committee member for the T20 World Cup 2016, hosted in Mumbai. He took charge of this role and was committed to providing a memorable experience to both the player and the visitors. Furthermore, he was also attributed as the key contributor to the reconstruction project of Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium before the World Cup final in 2011.

Promotion of Cultural Events:
Shelar’s Vandre West Constituency is a melting pot of cultures. Even though Shelar belongs to a fairy urban background, raised in a metropolitan like Mumbai, he has always shared a strong affinity to the traditional roots of Maharashtra and has taken a keen interest in preserving and promoting these roots and traditions through art forms and folk dances. Taking these inclinations forward, Shelar has organised mega events that provide a spotlight and promote the unique traditional artforms of Maharashtra. These included shows for dance forms like Kokani Dashavatar, Koli Dance and even Jakhadi dance.

Tributes to Musical Legends:
Shelar has a soft spot for Indian music and has made it his mission to revive the genre and pass it on to the future generation as a part of our own cultural
heritage. Because of this, Shelar has organised large-scale concerts in the past that have honoured Indian music icons like the late Mohammad Rafi. He planned a musical concert called “Latanjali” to pay respect to Bharat Ratna Lata Mangeshkar, which took place in Mumbai’s Shanmukhanand Hall on the first anniversary of her passing. Renowned figures from the Indian music and film industries attended the event, making a huge success.

Former Vice president National Library:
Shelar has taken on a number of initiatives that draw people closer to books and encourage a love of reading because he strongly believes in the value of reading and has a desire to promote the city’s reading culture. This was demonstrated in his capacity as the Former Vice President of the National Library, when he took responsibility of his duties and worked keenly to revive the history and reputation of this Bandra library that had been around for 100 years.
